Pushkarnath Kher was a Kashmiri Pandit who lived in Shimla since 1949 and worked as a clerk in the states forest department. He was common man who retired as the Head Clerk but his extraordinary view towards life made him different. He was extremely humorous and made everyone smile. Although his own body was giving up on him in his last days; yet he gathered his wisdom and came out with great moments worth remembering and laughing at.
Not only did he teach his family and friends to live in the present, he also taught them how to celebrate that present. Even when life brings some failures with it, he knew how to handle them happily and he passes his spirit to his loving kids- Anupam Kher and Raju Kher. He was more like a friend than a father to his kids and didn't mind less scores in academics, as long as they participated in their studies.Famous people from the industry would call him enthusiastic, optimistic and a happy soul; far away from the discriminatory and selfish world.
As Anupam Kher (his younger son) puts up, "The person that he was, was his biggest achievement".
Pushkarnath Kher breathed his last on Feb 10th, 2012 due to his prolonged illness. To much surprize, Anupam Kher and his brother Raju Kher invited all the guests to attend a colorful condolence meet for his father. This unique gathering was organized keeping in mind that his father always loved to celebrate life. He even called for a Rock Band performance in his father's memory.
Anupam Kher Tweeted:“Today is my father’s Prayer ceremony. I know he wants us to celebrate life. So there will be a Rock band playing in His memory at d ceremony.:)”. and even requested their friends and family the following:“Come clothed in colours, please. Because that's what my father provided in our lives all his life. Lots of vibrant colours of joy and positivity. I know he's up there looking down at us. He will find a way to connect with me, just like he did even in those days of bad STD connections between Shimla and Mumbai”.
On the condolence meet, Kirron Kher (his daughter-in-law) said that his essence was very innocent, very childlike..which every human loses. For him, a peon and chairman were both the same. The three words that Anupam Kher learnt from his father were - Simplicity, Humility and Happiness! Anupam had always been a superstar for his father and was very close to him.
A few months after his demise, Anupam Kher announced an annual award in his acting school. It was of Rupees 1 Lakh to the person who works outstandingly well in the field of art. He even dedicated the success of his play Kuch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai to his father and celebrated the 300th episode showcasing an autobiographical play.
Pushkarnath Kher taught his family the art of living life - That death cannot be escaped, but the option of celebrating life is always there with us.We should all learn from Pushkarnath Kher's last words to Anupam- "Live Life"
